If you haven't seen Afro Samurai you should go see it right now. Buy it, torrent it, whatever. Its a pretty cool anime about, you guessed it, a black samurai. The really unique thing about the series is the atmosphere. It uses themes pulled from black culture like an villain who delivers his lines in the style of a southern preacher. The best part the soundtrack which is produced by RZA and includes Talib Kweli, Qtip, and Big Daddy Kane to name a few. Check out the shows intro.
RZA's dirty beats compliment the atmosphere of the show perfectly. Its little things like how when the Afro Samurai goes into a bar RZA's songs are playing over the radio, or how during a fight scene involving Afro's dad RZA instramental is in the style of deep funk.
The song featuring Q-tip is also hot.
My friend Jon pointed out that performing an alternate version of your hit song takes some guts. The Grammys by its nature is a corporate beast, rewarding band that are at least somewhat mainstream. For a group like Gnarls Barkley who aren't well established in the main stream is shows some real guts to use an alternate version. A more conservative group would have chosen to go with their tried and true hit. Instead Ceelo and Dangermouse show a devotion to creativity by going with a slow version of their hit. Bravo!
Also, Gnarls Barkley always rocks the coolest outfits. Ceelo was looking pimp at the Grammys

UPDATE
I'm really looking forward to this show. Blackalicious generally pulls a good crowd in the Northwest. Hell, they shot their concert DVD at Neumos last year. The best part is that just this week I started listening to them again after a long hiatus. NIA is a classic, too bad it doesn't get more love. Then again its a sign of a good group when they can put out a classic like NIA and follow it up with an awesome album like Blazing Arrow. Damn, when does the next album come out.
